The West Coast Story
My first solo travelling trip took me to Mexico on a one-way ticket. I felt some nerves leaving the airport but soon got immersed in the flow of third world life again and felt the freedom of infinite opportunities. A few weeks in, I met some locals at the beach and got invited back to their village. Most of them were surfers and Alfredo let me stay at his house and work at his bakery. He would get up at 4am, deliver bread, and then we would surf all morning till it was siesta. They taught me how to short board at one of the best waves on the mainland, Pascualez. I also learnt how incredibly generous and loving the world is, and that money is not an important issue. They were open, kind, compassionate and I felt the life force that connects us all. After two weeks of surfing till I bled every day, I hit the road and travelled south to the small fishing village of La Ticla. It quickly became my favourite spot in Mexico, with perfect scenery waves and the friendliest humans. It was the most laid back place I’d ever been to and the lazy slothy days soon blended together in the heat of the desert sun. I met two Aussies camped on the point with their Volkswagon van and the rest of the trip fell into place. I spent 5 months with them travelling to every surf spot along the Coast from La Ticla to Panama, caught endless waves and found a new passion.
